"Pya Salvanera was here" :)
Round table discussion on Youth Employment and Migration: Strategic Plan at the Occupation, Safety and Health Center, Quezon City (DOLE, NYC)
Meeting and evaluation of the event

It was our first task as interns of FFW. I am not really familiar with labor issues so I was not able to raise issues and concerns. But somehow, I was able to understand the strategic plan, especially that I am part of the youth. Because of this, my co-interns realized that we should organize a project of holding an employment preparation seminar to graduating students in our school so that they will be able to know their rights and privileges in preparation for future employment.

Layout of FFW Brochure, Editing of Labor of Standards Format, and Layout of Atty. Matula’s book: Labor of Relations

We accepted office works, since there was no scheduled fieldwork for this day. I was tasked to change the layout of FFW’s brochure and we also edited some parts of an unpublished book authored by Atty. Matula: Labor Relations. We converted complicated terms to simpler and more understandable so that all readers will be able to comprehend what’s written on the book.

Documentation and event engagement on Child Labor Knowledge Sharing System (CLKSS) Launching at L&B Suites, 6th floor Kalayaan Ave. Cor. Don Pedro St. Makati City (Jeff Johnson, ILO)
I felt lucky for being part of the first batch of members of Child Labor Knowledge Sharing System (CLKKS). This is an online networking site that helps labor rights and children advocates track updates regarding child labor in the country so everyone who signed up will be able to read and share reports about the issue. One of the important features of CLKSS website is that it will be easier for the witnesses to report child labor incidents since it is just a click away.

Meeting our National President for the
first time.

Local President’s Meeting
FFW Headquarters
Quirino Avenue
This was the first time I met the national president of FFW, Atty. Allan Montano. In local president’s meeting, the leaders are gathered together to talk and share each other’s concerns about the organization. For this day, the main agenda was the activities for the Labor Day. They all agreed to set a parade/motorcade along Manila, and hold a short event in Kalaw. It was also a great opportunity for us that we are tasked to layout the T-shirt design for the participants’ attire on Labor Day.

April 15, 2011, Friday
AB Liner Electoral Process
AB Liner Terminal, Sta. Mesa Manila
AB liner employees
We have witnessed an electoral process for a union membership in AB Liner, a transportation company. In this process, they just have to vote for a ‘yes’ if they are in favor of having a union group, and no if you disagree with having such. Somehow, the election was peaceful yet the demarcation line between the employers and employees are visible. It was obvious who voted for union group since they became so aloof with their bosses as they were waiting for the results. In the end, the majority voted for “no”.

1st Labor and Employment Summit
SMX Conference Rm 3 & 4

We were glad to attend the first annual labor and employment summit in the Philippines. Through this, labor advocates and organizations can go hand in hand to raise issues and concerns regarding labor and employment. The most important part of the event was the presentation of the Philippine Development Plan in which they proposed a tripartite system (employer-employee-government partnership) in settling labor issues and concerns.

This was one of the most important events for every worker in the country for labor advocates, groups and the government gathered together to promote safe workplaces for laborers. The event started with a Holy Mass led by Fr. Gomez, followed by lectures regarding hazards, disasters and disaster preparedness. An informative video was presented to formally close the program and it was said that this video would be shown in each of the barangays to share information to the people. As part of the participants, I shared my commitment to a disaster free country which was posted on the wall.

Job Fair 2011, Luneta
Despite the extreme heat of the sun, we joined the workers in their parade as they advocate for more job opportunities and decent work in the Philippines. It was fun and indeed a great experience for us as we also visited the job fair in Rizal Park as we saw a lot of Filipino inventors who created a lot of innovations. We just hope that those people’s talents will be discovered and given funds. They have a big potential to make the Philippines proud because of their world-class inventions.

SSS Administrators
Consultative meeting of SSS on their Proposed Program Enhancements
This was a day for FFW members to consult their concerns and issues regarding the SSS. As an observer, I had learned a lot of things especially when it comes to the benefits of SSS. But after the meeting, there is still a question hanged in my mind, it is whether the SSS is a benefit or just a contribution (since most of the members are still not receiving any benefit from SSS).

Basic Course on the Trade Union Social Movement Sandigan ng Kawaning Pilipino sa GSK-FFW
I was one of the junior facilitators of Mr. Cainglet as he conducted a basic seminar for new union members of Glaxosmith Kleine, a drug company in the country. There were basic courses and topics discussed such as the grievance handling, collective bargaining agreement and the labor issues in the Philippines. As part of the facilitators, we discussed the gender mainstreaming in workplaces. Because of concepts and topics we learned in Women’s Studies, we were able to explain the topic thoroughly and it was glad to know that our trainees were able to understand the topic. Aside from that, we also prepared games to establish teamwork and bonding with the group.

Philippine Daily Inquirer Employees Union Leadership Training
Mr. Julius Cainglet as he discussed
the current state of labor in the
country.
Just like what we have done in Cainta, we also became the junior facilitators of this training, as we prepared strategy games and deliver gender mainstreaming module for the union group of PDI. It was a great opportunity for us to mingle with a lot of workers from the print journalism industry. We did not have a hard time earning their attention since they are all media practitioners, and I believe media practitioners are good listeners. Aside from preparing games and modules, we also conceptualized a “mock TV program” in a talkshow format to discuss the present situation of labor issues in the Philippines. This was to ensure that all of them will not get bored and to maintain their interest in the talk. We prepared the OBB and CBB, so as with the PSA and TV Commercials to be shown on the LCD Projector. The two-day training gave us a great experience that served as our last two days of internship in FFW. A great experience that will never be forgotten.
